BUSH KINDER
Gum Nut Gully Pre-School launched a Bush Kinder program in 2019 for the 4 year old groups.

Our Bush Kinder groups will gather in the Mullum Mullum Trail parklands, the traditional land of the Wurundjeri People. For each group, one day per week during terms 2 and 3, sessions will begin out in the parklands and children will enjoy morning exploration completely outdoors.

This program allows children to learn when immersed in nature. It creates a space where children can investigate, explore, take risks and connect with the natural environment. Bush Kinder takes inspiration from forest schools in Norway, where there is no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothing. Our educators aim to bring the same philosophy to the banks of the Mullum Mullum Creek.

Learning in nature invigorates the senses, stimulates the imagination and nourishes wellbeing. By building cubby houses, climbing trees, splashing in puddles and playing games, the children are learning with their whole bodies. Research suggests that children who play regularly in natural settings are sick less often. Mud, sand, water, leaves, sticks, pine cones and gum nuts can help to stimulate a child's immune system as well as their imagination. Children who play in natural settings can be more resistant to stress, have lower incidence of behavioural disorders, anxiety and depression, and a higher measure of self-worth.

We are working closely with the Manningham Council Bush Management team to ensure we are educating the children on the ecosystem that is in our local parklands. We will encourage children to respect and protect our natural habitats, floral and faunal communities and learn about why these are important to our environment.

We look forward to continuing an exciting Bush Kinder program filled with wonder, exploration and the great outdoors!
